Britney Spears on ending conservatorship: ‘I am taking the right medication’

Britney Spears spoke out about the end of her conservatorship during a Thursday interview with 20/20. “I feel like every step of the way, I was, like, what’s going on? And I just have my team and my team’s mental health doctor that can really look at me and tell me what’s up, what’s not up,” she told Diane Sawyer. “And, I am taking the right medication.”

Spears was placed under conservatorship in 2008, shortly after her father took control of her finances. She divorced Kevin Federline in 2006 and filed for divorce from her agent Sam Asghari in 2018. Spears has remained busy with her work since her divorce. The singer has been on tour, released her eighth studio album, Glory, in 2017, and starred on James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke segment. The performer also appeared in the Netflix comedy hit Sex Education last year.

Spears also sat down with Sawyer to discuss her love life. The pop star admits to “letting myself go,” following the death of her father. She explained, “I had to go through my dad’s death process and process — getting back on my feet, you know, and emotionally, letting myself go, becoming a part of somebody else’s life. I definitely didn’t know, I didn’t let anyone in that period of time,” she said. “I didn’t know how to connect with other people. I had to take myself off that whole stage and just really heal, take care of myself and get to the place where I knew I could be healthy again.” She then revealed that she and recently-announced boyfriend Sam Asghari had recently started dating. Asghari was present during Spears’ interview.

The singer was asked about her battle with mental health, which she had opened up about before. In 2007, Spears had a breakdown when her brother’s car accident pushed her to the brink. Spears told Sawyer that she’s no longer “living my life for the moment” and that her priorities are with her two children, Sean and Jayden.

Spears won’t appear on ABC’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, set to air Friday, during which she was originally scheduled to perform. In an interview with The Edit, Spears said she “absolutely” wants to make a comeback and has been working to get back on the road, but that Victoria’s Secret has made the decision for her.

“I had to take a break before Victoria’s Secret — I was on stage performing at the Super Bowl for 90 minutes in three days — so that I could re-energize and get back to the stage,” she said. “But I’m definitely taking a break for a little bit. Victoria’s Secret has made the decision for me. They don’t want me to perform at the show. I’m not bitter. I’m like, ‘Well, it doesn’t matter. I’m not just going to give up — I’m going to keep working, and I’m not going to stop at anything that I want to do.’ ”

Spears did accept an invitation to attend the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai this year as a guest. She told The Edit that she’s been trying to put the experiences of her past behind her and move forward. “I’m so much stronger than I was just a couple of years ago,” she said. “I’m definitely in a much better place.”
