The Department of Homeland Security has begun a pilot program to test the use of “real-time” biometrics on domestic flights. The pilot program will test whether passengers would be able to use their real-time biometric data such as fingerprints, facial features and iris scans to unlock their respective seats on flights and their luggage. If the pilot program is successful, the Department will expand it for commercial flights in the US.

The Department of Homeland Security has also taken preliminary steps to improve biometric capabilities of US airports. The agency is conducting a pilot program in which the use of facial recognition at the New York area airports would be evaluated.
