Emma Raducanu and Naomi Osaka both lost in their first-round matches.
The 28-year-old former world No. 1 Raducanu lost 6-2, 6-3 to Jannik Hansen of Denmark, while the 24-year-old Osaka lost in 6-4, 6-4 to Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain.
It is the first time Osaka, who has won an Olympic gold and two consecutive WTA Finals titles, has not advanced to the second round.
Raducanu will meet the winner of the other quarter-final between No. 7 seed Elina Svitolina and No. 2 seed Ashleigh Barty.
