According to multiple people who have spoken with Oz — who has called Sen. Pat Toomey a “poster child for increasing the tax burden” — the endorsement is “baked in” for a high-profile endorsement he is set to give to Republican Mike Braun in a key Republican Senate primary contest in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.
Axios first reported that Oz was planning to endorse Braun in a primary he is in the midst of in the state, which Republicans have yet to secure in the race for former Sen. Bob Casey’s seat.
This endorsement will come as Toomey faces a strong primary challenge from Democrat Susan Wild.
Oz’s endorsement will likely be the biggest boost Braun has received yet in his campaign and could give him a much-needed boost in a state that Trump won handily in 2016.
Toomey’s spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
This endorsement is a bigger deal for Oz because he has never thrown his weight behind a Republican House or Senate candidate. Sources say Oz considered backing former Republican Rep. Lou Barletta in a 2016 Senate primary but he ultimately backed Barletta’s now-defeated opponent, Katie McGinty.
