US tennis star feels some people don’t want Black players to succeed
You heard it right. Some White people don’t want her to succeed.
You won’t believe me if you hear me say that I think she’s going to be one of the greatest players of our time. You know, I am the most optimistic person you could ever meet. I’m always like, “She’s going to be the #1 player.” And I truly am. But when you get to this point, you know, there are some people who, as a whole, just can’t stand the thought that she might be successful.
They’re afraid that she’s going to be taken down. So, I’ve actually been dealing with some of these people for a couple of years. I know how to talk to them. I just let it be known that she can succeed. And that just lets them know, that if she succeeds, then they can say that. “Oh, that’s fine. We’ll live. We’ll be OK with it. Because in the grand scheme of things, she won’t be as important, as important as the white tennis players.”
I tell them, “Take it from me. It isn’t only White people that have this problem. I think a lot of people have this problem. They’ve had it all up until now. They’ve had it from all over the color lines. And now, all of a sudden, they can put it on Black people, but it’s still not OK.”
So, I try to talk to them. I try to tell them that, like, it’s not OK. I don’t know how to do it. I don’t know how to talk to them. But I believe in myself because I can talk to them. I can talk in a certain way. But not all of them. Some of them, like, they see things in a different way. And I’m not so good at it. But I’m going to keep trying, because I believe she could be great. I believe that she could be great.
And I don’t even know what is going to happen. I don’t even know how much time I have. And if I don’t do it now, do you know what I’m saying? Maybe she won’t become great. Maybe she won’t become the greatest tennis player of the present.
