The Irish Independent reported on Tuesday that eight people were arrested after fights broke out at funerals in Ireland, the latest incident of violence at funerals following the scandal in South Africa and Italy.
According to Ireland’s RTÉ, 10 people were arrested at a funeral in Roscommon on Monday afternoon when an altercation broke out at a wake and three vehicles were allegedly used in the violence. Several people involved in the funeral were arrested and the casket was taken away from the ceremony.
Police officers and members of the Garda press team present at the funeral accused one woman of trying to set fire to the coffin in a move to “scare” relatives as the coffin passed in front of the church.
