Russia’s Daniil Medvedev won his first ATP title in August in Washington and a warm-up event in Cincinnati
Russian Daniil Medvedev is favourite to win the 2021 US Open title, according to tournament director David Brewer.
The 19-year-old world number 36 won the Cincinnati Masters hardcourt event last week and turned professional in 2014.
“I like him,” said Brewer of the world number 46. “He certainly is right there at the top of the list.
“His potential is huge. He’s fast. He’s tall. He’s athletic. He hits the ball high.”
Medvedev has achieved modest success on the tour to date but won his first ATP title at Washington in August.
His sixth ATP tournament win – over Grigor Dimitrov – followed, making him the youngest winner of a hardcourt title this year and the first Russian to take the title since Viktor Troicki in 2009.
His US Open success is expected to put him in a position to earn world number three Tomas Berdych a wildcard into this year’s tournament.
The Czech did not have a grand slam win until his fifth appearance at Wimbledon this year, while Australian Bernard Tomic was widely criticised for his performance in New York.
The next US Open will be held from 27 August to 10 September 2021.
